Very clear in my mind why I'm so passionate about this. And I love getting reminders of that, specifically in client conversations. So I have two examples that come to mind, both have a similar theme to them and were experiences that we had in completing the financial plan that I mentioned earlier. One was from a single woman stepping into retirement, and the other is a young couple. The husband is a doctor. So both of them, I think, were feeling just unclear on their finances if I take the woman going into retirement. This is a big leap for her, right? She saved her whole life for this. You know, hopefully you do it right and only retire once. So she was doing it on her own too. That the ability to go through her financial plan and give her the confidence that she needed to make that step quite literally moved her to tears. You know, she talks about in this meeting the financial impact, but just the peace of mind that comes from the work that we're doing together. That to me was a testament of this is exactly where I'm supposed to be. This is what I'm supposed to be.

I'm Pedro, and today I'm joined by Jessica Smith, who's a co-founder and principal financial advisor at Vitality Wealth, a fee-only advisory firm based in Boise, Idaho, where she and her husband James serve young high earners navigating complex compensation and clients approaching retirement. She's a certified financial planner, CFP, and a CPA bringing technical rigor and genuine passion for helping clients build lasting financial security. Welcome to the show, Jessica. Thank you. Glad to be here. Great to have you, you know, and Jessica, I'm kind of a comic book nerd myself, you know, little side story for you. So I love the first editions, you know, the origin story, because you could be doing so many things with your life, but you chose to be a certified financial planner plus a CPA. So can you walk me through that decision? The origin story. What what actually made you chose that path? And why did you choose it?

Jessica Smith 2:50

Yeah. Well, it is a good story because this isn't where I thought I was gonna be uh when I set out in college. I think I was more drawn to some of the business management or even human resource type things. That was more part of my personality naturally, I'd say. Then I took my first accounting class and my professor told me, if you've got any, you know, interest in this, because it's obvious you've got the hard skill, your brain is understanding the technical details, you should consider leaning into it. So that started getting my wheels turning about accounting in general, specifically the tax side of things. And so I continued on, got my bachelor's degree in accounting, followed by my master's degree in accounting, and then started with that CPA path. Quickly found out that being layers of managers deep, you know, in a cubicle, plugging and chugging tax returns wasn't what I had in mind for myself, where I envisioned myself. I was really drawn more to the people side of business. Accounting is obviously really valuable that it's the language of business, but I wanted to spend more time in the proactive planning side of things, the strategy that went along with it. And that's when my husband, James, the also the other owner of the firm, he was one of the unicorns who knew exactly what he wanted to do from the beginning in college. And he went straight to financial planning. He kept saying, you know, I hear this voice in the back of my head, or quite literally there next to me, saying, I think you'd be really interested in what I do. I'm like, no, no, that's that's your thing. I've got my own path here. Little by little he kept planning that seed, and sure enough, finally I gave into it and found that, you know, financial planning really is where my passion is, and I found my love for it there. So it took me a little bit to go from the CPA accounting route into becoming a certified financial planner and focusing more on personal financial planning. But I feel glad that it got me to where I am now because I I do believe that's the best spot for me. Interesting.

Now, in this podcast, we love the entrepreneur's journey, right? So that is almost like a leap of faith that is made. Uh, I know we were talking before you opened shop in 2025, right? And uh started your own business with your partner, okay? But can you walk us through how did that felt like? You know, when you you you took that leap of faith, start open shop, you're like reaching out for clients because you're used to corporate world, right? And I worked in corporate too. And when I worked in corporate, it was like I when I clocked out, I clocked out, right? Sayonara, everyone. And then you you start your own business, and then it's hard to turn the switch off sometimes. You're in the weekends and you're like thinking about the business. So can you walk us through that decision building your own practice?

Jessica Smith 5:37

Sure. I think you hit the nail on the head there. It exactly felt like we were standing on the edge of a cliff. James and I both had great backgrounds and experiences at different independent RAAs, financial advisor firms based out of Boise. We it was great training ground for both of us, and we learned so much there. Um, but it was it was comfortable, exactly like you described. We had um stable career paths, everything from salary to path to ownership. We enjoyed the work that we were doing there for clients, the team that we were doing it with, but did fill that entrepreneur pitch. It's not very often that you had the same career as your spouse. So the idea of our paths crossing and being able to do what we're both so passionate about and we're doing at different firms together was really attractive to us. In addition to the added freedom and flexibility that that would provide for our family, those benefits were certainly there while also recognizing we'd be starting from zero. We'd go from these strong incomes to nothing. And that was certainly a leap of faith. And as planners ourselves, of course, all sorts of running the numbers and setting targets and places we'd need to be. But it felt exactly like that. And I think it was just that that seed that was in deep of in deep with both of us, maybe from our time at Utah State in Logan at the business school there, the motto is Dare Mighty Things. I think we both heard that in the back of our head and knew that this was gonna be a leap, but those long-term benefits for our family would be worth it. So that's what led us to ultimately take the plunge. Okay.

And after you got rolling in your own business, right? Uh, who are the people that kept showing up? I know you're financial planners and all that, but eventually, I'm not sure if you got to that point, you start attracting a certain type of people, the ones you realize, okay, this these are really my people. This is my tribe. You know what I mean? Did that eventually come up to a spot that you had you're hitting a certain demographic or not at all?

Jessica Smith 7:44

Yeah, in terms of the clients that we serve, or maybe our own support system, you mean?

Pedro Stein 7:48

I would say the clients you serve.

Jessica Smith 7:50

Yeah, I would say that's something we've been very intentional about from the beginning. James and I um are were very clear when starting this business of who we wanted to serve and the fact that we weren't setting out to serve hundreds and hundreds of clients. We wanted to keep a more small, personalized, high-touch experience with our clients. And so in order to do that, we needed to have the right people who we serve. And so I would say that comes down to where complexity exists. Maybe it's high earners or high assets that they've accumulated. We often see that dual-income couples, for example, they've got a lot going on between their professional lives and their family lives, that the idea of managing their personal finances is just too much and it gets put off to the side. So there becomes a lot of overwhelm or just frustration in their personal finances. And that's really where we step in and start to add a lot of value. Okay.

Pedro Stein 8:48

Adding value, love that. Okay. Now let's pretend I'm one of those people. Okay. I'm your ideal client profile, I'm your avatar. And uh, first of all, how would I be able to find you guys, right? Find your business, marketing-wise. How would I how would I be able to find you, like marketing-wise, you know?

Jessica Smith 9:04

Yeah, yeah. I would say our clients up to this point have been a combination of personal network and people finding us online, which is new for us. Our experience at those prior firms, that wasn't a big part of there was no marketing budget, in fact, for that. Rarely would you see business development happen that way. So our eyes have been opened to the number of people who are asking Chat GPT, you know, their favorite AI source, whatever it is, their personal finance questions. And ultimately it leads them down the path of you, you need somebody who's fee only and fiduciary, which were both of those things, and end up getting connected with them that way. So I would say people who aren't currently in our personal network are finding us through AI, through that online presence.

Interesting. Okay. So I'm still in that game of pretend. I'm still your avatar. Okay. Let's say I got in touch with you guys through the personal network or even Chat GPT told me to talk with you guys, right? You never know. And I'm like reaching out and I eventually go through the sales process. However, that looks like we can talk a little bit about that. You can add that. But if we can, or if you want, we can just say there is alignment. You guys know you can help me. You know, I realize you guys can help me. What I would love to understand, and for you to give me like a little peek behind a curtain of how does it look like to work with you guys, right? And what the outcomes I can expect.

Jessica Smith 10:29

Yeah, great. Well, I think it is important to just touch on what that discovery process, we would call it, looks like. We're very thoughtful and spend a lot of time in that process to make sure that it's the right fit both ways. Our our clients or our prospects will find that we're very honest and transparent in that stage. We we ask for some uploads, some details about their personal financial life, and then prepare a 60-minute meeting where we go into detail of things that are maybe working well for them, areas of opportunities we see, and directly the places that we would go to work on for them, just so they can get a feel of what that partnership would look like. And honestly, more often than not, we say just go do these few simple things on your own. You know, life's not complex enough yet for it to make sense to you for you to hire us on an ongoing basis. That is the one way that we work with clients is on an ongoing basis. So we're in touch dozens of times throughout the year. It's not a once set it and forget it. Here's your one-time financial plan sort of thing. So once we've found that there's alignment, it's a mutual fit, we move into what's called our onboarding phase, where we get their accounts set up, you know, align on the right investment portfolio for them, just some tactical things like that. But I'll say the duel, the crowning duel of that onboarding process is doing their first financial plan. So this is really where we map out income, the money coming in, expenses, the money going out, where they're saving to, and really what that trajectory looks like between now, retirement, end of life. And I'll say that that tends to be everybody's favorite meeting. That's the one where they really start to ask some insightful questions and I would say see themselves and what their future life can be and how especially they can find some balance in living for today while also doing the right things to set them up for the future. So once we have that meeting, you know, we go into the more ongoing nature of our work where, you know, for example, someone who has stock compensation, maybe they have quarterly vests. That's a natural touch point for us. We're checking in on tax planning things, maybe some estate planning items, their portfolio throughout the year. And then at least once a year, we're doing another deep dive where we revisit what the portfolio has done for the year, check in on that financial plan, reflect refresh any items that we need to there, but really just outside of those known touch points that we know we're gonna have, just serving as you know, their on-call financial expert. So any major life decision that comes up for them often involves some impact on their money. And we want to be their first call, right? A sounding board, someone to bounce ideas off of for anything that smells like money in their life. Numbers, right?

Pedro Stein 13:14

And not the whys behind it. And not about the future or the plan itself. Because at the end of the day, at least for me, numbers are something to get to a point, to a goal, to whatever you want to do, right? If you want to retire, if you want to whatever, but the numbers will get you there. But sometimes the conversation seems a little bit more I don't want to a little bit cynical, a little bit transactional, and people tend to forget what's the real purpose behind the plan, right? Do you guys have take the time to understand what's real what really a client wants to achieve, or is it more like a portfolio management kind of thing?

Jessica Smith 13:48

Not at all. I would say, in fact, we're the opposite of transactional. We're very relationship-based. And the way that we get to know our clients from a personal level is so important to us because that shows what's important to them. So our our slogan or our motto here at our firm is being a partner in wealth and well-being. We really believe that's part of why we're called Vitality Wealth is that money is a powerful tool. It's not a means in and of itself, right? Or a means to an end. It's what you, it's what you do with that money. It's the life that you live and the fulfillment that you find there. And it's so common for these high-performing professionals to just be down in the weeds of the day-to-day that for someone to take the time to listen and ask them questions about what is this money for? You know, what's the right balance in terms of your lifestyle? How are we going to use this money to support some of those goals? And maybe you've thought of those goals, or maybe our conversation is going to tease that out for you. That's that's some where we do some of our best work, I would say. And it's also what makes it so rewarding or powerful, maybe being a couple ourselves doing this business with James. We understand that family dynamic behind it and always look to involve both spouses in the money conversations, even when maybe one has more of a natural tendency there than the other. Okay.

Pedro Stein 15:10

Now I wanna shift gears for a second. I want to talk about something I felt in my skin when I opened shop, opened my business, like comparing my life in corporate. Well, it was a well-oiled machine in the background running. I didn't knew what leads meant, right? What the business development meant. It's like, oh, a lot of work on my desk that I gotta do, right? That vibe. Now, your work seems pretty hands-on, high touch, you mentioned, right? So, how do you think about capacity so you don't stretch yourself too thin? And the reason I asked this is because it's sometimes we focus too much on delivery, and then we need to focus on sales, and then we have marketing, and then we have delivery again, and then we have to do a workshop, you know? So it's hard to manage all that. So how do you do that?

Jessica Smith 15:57

Yeah, that's that's entrepreneurship, right? Wearing all of the different hats. I would say in general, what we come back to if there was these, you know, this hierarchy of things, it's current clients first. That's always our priority. Next would be new business. And then of course, there's working on the business and some of our processes. There's a foundational layer, I would say, of making sure you've got the right things in place to support those current clients. But we really keep that the forefront of what we do because ultimately, you know, we're in the business to serve them, especially these early ones who maybe they felt like they were taking a bet on us, you know, early in the stages of our business. And so we really prioritize that client service. And I feel like that's what ultimately leads to new business, anyways, right? People sharing with their friends the benefits that they're receiving. So that's part of just the mindset that goes into it. James and I, as planners, set very clear goals when it comes to capacity. So for us to get to build our firm to a point of maybe 70 to 100 clients, we know the the ongoing workload that comes with that. And that's that's the target for now between the two of us of where we feel like we can manage that high-touch personalized service while also prioritizing the family balance that we have that we hope to have in our own financial plan. So I would say some long-term vision there in combination with some just short-term mindset that that we think about day to day. Interesting.

Pedro Stein 17:30

Okay. Now I'm gonna jump on that boat. You mentioned Target, right? Whenever someone tells me about Target, I'm thinking about future. So I'm curious about where you and James are taking all this, you know? Look ahead. Where do you see the business going? Are you thinking about scaling, hiring, or is there a next step that you're excited about?

Jessica Smith 17:47

Yeah, yeah. We're really excited where the business is headed and are really proud of where it's come so far. So just over the last 18 months, we've been able to bring on about 24 clients at that pace of maybe one or two new clients per month. We feel like over the next three, three to five years will get us on track to to where we hope to be. And again, being really intentional about the right people, the ones who we can offer the most value for and finding that mutual fit is a priority of ours. And obviously, with that, you know, that Target supports not only the lifestyle, but the income goals that we have for ourselves. Both can be true there. So we're we're hopeful with this pace that we're on and the things that we're doing. You know, we've got good proof of concept at this point and are always looking to refine and you know, recenter ourselves as maybe we drift off course here and there. Um, but we're excited about the future.

Pedro Stein 18:45

Hey, and of course, you you mentioned yourself, refining, right? Whenever we're aiming towards something new, always something we're refining in the present. So, what are you guys currently trying to improve or tighten up in your business right now? Yeah.

Jessica Smith 18:58

I think a big one for us is where we started 18 months ago, it was just whatever you got to do to keep the lights on, right? So find new business. That was really our focus and starting to develop these relationships. With that, there was an introductory layer of all things compliance, tech stack, you know, getting familiar with your new symptom, with your new systems. But since then, have kind of just been going on autopilot with those things and focusing on the service to the new clients that we're that we've been bringing on. So now I think where we're at this point of a solid foundation and now looking to scale further really becomes this opportunity to find efficiencies in our systems, our processes, the ways that we are using our technology to keep that foundation solid, right? And to help us be more efficient in reaching that overall client count, making sure nothing slips through the cracks. That's where it's tough to make it a priority, I would say, right? It's not as you don't see the reward as tied to it on the surface, but we both know it should be a priority that it that it exists and that ultimately it'll be what supports us in reaching those long-term goals. So that's something that's been lingering, I'd say.

Pedro Stein 20:13

Interesting. Not to mention, right? Sometimes, at least in my business, like I'm I'm doing like six, eight hour days an hour. Okay, now I need to develop something, right? Like I am done. I don't want to do it, right? So there's also that. There's a like there is the day-to-day that's non-stopping too. So it's adding something new to the plate, but you know that eventually will pay off, so we gotta do it in a way, right? Now, I would love for us to venture a little bit into a sci-fi territory, okay? For us to have, like, for example, a time machine in front of us. I know it's pretty fresh, right? We're talking about 18 months in the game as in your own business, but I know how of a so racking experience it is, the the entrepreneurship, right? The journey itself. So we're gonna have two stops on this time machine. Okay. The first stop, you can go back when you st you opened up the business, okay, 18 months ago, and you can tell past Jessica one piece of business advice you wish you knew back then. Okay, that you know now, like a suggestion. An advice. What would that look like?

Jessica Smith 21:18

I would say be confident, right? Trust, trust yourself, trust your ability, and put in the hard work to get there, but know that you know the right inputs lead to the right outputs. And the perspective that I have now, just being 18 months in if only I could give myself starting this business, where we talked about the leap of faith that it was, and just especially when you have a family, you know, that you've got to support the way that you question everything is is this gonna be a setback? Is this, you know, really the right thing, just to have some confidence or added perspective on, you know, it it's gonna work out, right? Do the right things again and be open to new ideas. And evolving as you continue to work on the business, not being set in any one way, and and that'll lead you to where you need to be.

Would past Jessica be surprised seeing you be an entrepreneur right now?

Jessica Smith 22:12

Not being an entrepreneur. I would say this this has always been part of who I am. So that part wouldn't be surprising at all. I think we've even surprised ourselves with the success that we've been able to see and experience 18 months. So I think we would have been very surprised to know where we would be in the business in such a short amount of time, which we're so grateful for. But I think that entrepreneurial spirit is not a surprise for anyone who knows me.

Yeah, I love that. It's just like, oh my god, why didn't I start this earlier? Right. It's like I love it. Okay. Second stop, Jessica. You can go back in time in that in those 18 months. You can pick up uh one specific time. But I know that could you put you could potentially have more than one, but I want the top of mind, okay? Which is a moment that you realize, oh, this is why I'm doing this, right? You felt so fulfilled. I'm not sure if it's on a client part or something you were able to achieve, or if it's freedom with your kids, or whatever that looks like, but that moment in time that made you realize why you started the journey itself on the entrepreneur in the 18 months you're in. What would that look like?

They just felt like having gone through med school, they should be pinching pennies all the time, saving, saving. But now with this high income, the ability to go through a financial plan with them and say, Yeah, here's your travel budget for this year, spend it. You know, don't feel like it always needs to be less, less. Go have that experience. You know, go to the NFL game with your with your boys and seeing them actually book the trip and live with their money. They've told us both since then how how much more aligned and confident they feel in spending money today, knowing that they've set themselves up well for the future. Both of those are just examples of the feeling that's been created as a result of partnering with someone on their finances, and that's that's all I could ever hope for, right?

Okay, now I want to I love that story, and I want to ask you one last question here to to close in a in a kind of a cheesy way, okay? Because I I I'm hearing everyone trying to replace everything with AI, and I'm thinking out loud, trying to to be in the shoes of your avatar, right? And I'm thinking, why should I hire Jessica? Right? Should I use AI and ask AI, ChatGPT, Claude, whatever, please build myself a financial plan, you know, so I can follow through as a financial planner would tell me to do so. What would you say is the main difference of having that human touch, having your firm helping, you know, instead of a generic AI solution, for example?

Jessica Smith 26:02

Yeah, one of the most common things that we all know and see with AI in general is that it matters a lot what kind of questions you ask it. You don't know what you don't know either. So the way that you prompt it can also be can often lead to the type of output that you get. There definitely is something to having someone who maybe knows what you need before you even know it, right? So just that experience there, I think, goes a long way. But I'll say you'll never find an AI who cares as much as I do about your personal, your professional life. So that that level of depth and care that we bring to our relationships can't be replicated, honestly. Everything from, you know, caring about what's important to their family to carrying that across the finish line and implementing it in their portfolio. And the peace of mind, again, that comes with just that ongoing guidance and partner of someone who is looking at the full picture. Everything from the investments to the taxes has your best interest at heart and is always there for you, again, is not something I believe AI can replicate.

Pedro Stein 27:11

I love that. You know, I'm thinking about uh the prompt, right? How biased it can be. Like if I ask Chat GPT to come up with uh top three TikTok dances I can get to get clients on the financial planning side, it will give me a list, right? It will like But they do they don't hang out at TikTok, right? That's the thing. I I I might be biased and way off. So having someone to call in you out when you don't know what you don't know, I think it's like even asking the right questions to understand your purpose, like of what do you why do you want to save money? Why do you want to have this plan? It's something that people don't often realize or even understand what they're they're getting into, right?

Jessica Smith 27:51

Yeah, exactly. This this whole conversation of your personal finances is very much so a science and an art. So, I mean, I'm the first to admit that we've had prospects come to us with the plan that, you know, their AI source has generated for them and we'll review it. And you know, there's some really good things to it. It's not that it's wrong at all. Again, there's just usually more context that it's missing, whether it be on the hard numbers or just about their life and how it fits in to those numbers. So it often feels incomplete or maybe not a full reflection of who they are. There's more to it.

Pedro Stein 28:29

Yeah, sometimes I feel like AI is, I mean, it's very, it's a very great, it's a very efficient tool, great tool, but sometimes it lacks on the context and it sometimes it gives you surface level answers. Especially if you don't if you don't get the right question to it. Okay. Interesting. Okay, you know, there were uh some parts of this chat today that really stood out to me. I'll highlight them. Okay. Back to the origin story when you told me you were tired of working at a Kobe Culture, right? You were like, this is not the life, and I guess that has got to be more. And there's more, unfortunately, right? And then you took the leap of faith on entrepreneurship, and not just that, you're with your your partner. I I love that leap of faith because in a way it's an identity shift, right? It's something that you're like, oh okay, I'm an entrepreneur, I have to take care of everything right now. So in a way, is it shock, but it's also there's also a freedom piece of to it, right? It's it's great to be able to manage your calendar, to manage what you want to focus on. So there's that. Now moving forward to the discovery process, then I would I tried on to speed up the sales process, but fortunately you told me, wait a minute, Pedro. This is important because it's very detailed, because this is where you know the why. Why are we doing this? Why are we creating a plan, right? Where do you want to go? So I love the fact that the discovery is like a process to its own, you know, love it. Last but not least, I think it was the the the piece of advice you gave yourself to be more confident, right? I see a lot of a lot of entrepreneurs in the starting their journeys. Sometimes some people call it an imposter syndrome, sometimes people call it like, oh, I should just go all in. They didn't. But eventually, sometimes you just gotta test yourself, put the reps in, see how that looks like, you know, and uh you giving yourself that advice tells me there is a part of you that actually knew it was deep down that you all you had to do was do it, right?
